Here's another bunch. There are only one or two keys from various sequences because I was probably splitting the sequence with Kristen or Nicolas Weis.
This one was originally done by Kristen for the Blue Core shot. I was able to take her version and do the Red Core shot.
This is a color key that was done by everybody at some point.

Here's a couple of paintings from a few months back.
This first one was done from a photo that I had taken from out front of my house.
This next one was done at a Bill Perkins workshop. I went back into it recently and touched up a few things.
This is the beginning of my time doing lighting keys. Up to then, I never did lighting keys or knew how they were used. Sam asked me if I was interested and I said yes, I'd be happy too. He said we'll see about that, it's going to be rough. It was. Not only did I not know how to do them, but I had to learn very fast and to do them the way Sam wanted them. It was a very stressful beginning and I was never sure of myself but I had great guidance from Kristen Lester who became a good friend during this time. I learned a lot doing these and probably could have learned a lot more.
I'm going to show them in the order in which I did them. I feel that it would be good to show the progress that was made.
This was the first sequence I did with a lot of help from Sam.
These were done kind of solo.

One job that I was given was to design the paint scheme for the Spirit of Freedom ship. It was designed by Sam Michlap and built by Mark Lefitz. I didn't realize at the time how this ship was going to be seen on screen. So, the first time I saw it was on a trailer for the film and I was pretty happy with the design that was picked.

Once a design was picked, I did turn arounds.
Below are a bunch of look packets that were done for various locations in the movie. These were some of last things I would do before my time ended on Astroboy
It was decided that a more "brick" like design was needed, so, I did more "post it" roughs..
and once a direction was decided on, a tighter render was done...
with orthographics.
The exterior look packet was done by my friend Brian Beppu. He also did the interior concept designs and look packets of the command bridge and the ramp area that you see in the film.

After sitting with Sam and Jake the next step was to do tighter renders of some of the concepts that we liked.
If you saw the movie, you know that these didn't "fly".
So, it was back to the post it notes.
After working on Tenma's Limo and Elfuns car, I got a chance to design President Stones ship. Up to that point all the other ships were designed by Sam Michlap and I figured that they were all covered. So, when this one came my way I was pretty excited.
Being familiar with the design language of the film I thought it was time to have some fun. So back to the post it notes.
After sitting with the Sam and Jake, we decided which designs to flesh out.
These are just a few vehicles that did or didn't make it into the movie. I know the train did with some modifications but I don't remember seeing the bus or truck.
That's it for the ground vehicles. Next up, the flying stuff.
It was decided that my original concepts for the Limo were not Limo enough. What was wanted was the traditional limo look. That didn't stop me from trying to twist it a little. Back to the post it notes...

So, eventually I got there.

I don't think they ever showed up on the Limo.
Also disregard the "Dr Tanner" on the some of the images. I don't remember why I started out regarding Tenma as Tanner.
This was my first assignment when I started on Astroboy. It started out pretty cool, I always wanted to take a shot at designing vehicles and again I thank Jake and Sam for the chance.
After becoming some what familiar with the Noguchi design direction it gave me a pretty good place to start. So I started off with post it note drawings...
After review of the various designs a few were decided on and I then started to do a more comprehensive render of the ones that were selected.
These were really fun to do. I was trying to design a limo that didn't look like your average limo. I felt that what makes a limo is a driver, maybe in a dark suit and cap, maybe tinted windows and probably a dark color. The shape could be anything.
I guessed wrong.
Some of these designs did show up in the film as other vehicles.
